Our Philosophy

Shawnee Presbyterian Preschool is based on the philosophy that all children are entitled to high-quality social, spiritual, emotional, physical and intellectual care.  These components of early education are the stepping stones to the enthusiastic, self-confident, inquisitive child and ultimately, to the productive adult who will influence our future.

To achieve our goals, Shawnee Presbyterian Preschool strives to provide the love, guidance and experiences necessary to meet each child's individual needs within his or her own unique timetable of development.

"Earliest isn't best.  Fastest isn't best.  If what we want for our children is a lifetime of excellence -- in experience, in ability, in knowledge -- we must be responsible enough to wait and thorough enough to look at all sides of their development."

Bev Bos,
Before the Basics

We believe God's children are special and unique and should be taught according to their own developmental level.  In a Christian environment each child is guided toward becoming the most complete person he or she can be by emphasizing not only academic skills but also socialization and verbal skills.  We do this by offering opportunities to make decisions, to try new things, to make mistakes and to discover on their own under our guidance.  We believe in the power of praise as the main tool to raise a child's self-esteem.  We teach God's love by demonstrating an unselfish, caring attitude toward each other, by respecting and accepting differences and by understanding that all of us are created equal in God's image.

Our Christian Preschool Curriculum

The spiritual/Christian aspect of the Shawnee Presbyterian Preschool curriculum is based upon Christian values.  These values do not reflect specific doctrine.  They reflect behaviors and moral standards which parents universally desire to be instilled in their children:

 Kindness * Faith * Sharing
 Goodness * Giving * Compromise
 Fairness * Love * God's Gifts
 Thankfulness * Peace * Belonging
 Unselfishness * Joy * Trust
 Forgiveness * Self-Control * Friendship
 Patience * Caring * Helping
Value of Family * Gentleness * Obedience
Appreciation of and Respect for Life

Specific Christian themes for each month are assigned annually in an effort to give equal emphasis to all values during a child's preschool career.

Each theme is interwoven into the curriculum on a daily basis.  Teachers introduce the theme by using it as the main emphasis of a group discussion at the beginning of the month.  After that, the theme is blended into the regular daily curriculum through story, role-play, interpretation of children's experiences, art projects, and science activities.  Visitors may be invited to interact with the class on the month's theme.
